Jessica Lurie
Seattle-born-New York-based instrumentalist Jessica Lurie performs on saxophones, flute and voice. With skill and discipline borne from her-life long dedication to music composition and improvisation, Lurie creates a pulsing, brimming, expansive sound. Joined by an ensemble of stellar musicians, she barrels across uncharted territories where jazz, folk, chaos and beauty all come out to play. “Jessica Lurie is considered one of the most exciting interpreters of music today, pushing stylistic barriers not simply to ramble from one genre to another, but to construct new musical landscapes, to daydream with an extreme sense of purpose.” (Giuseppe Segala, All About Jazz Italy) "Her ensemble shifts among funk, jazz, folk and ethnic melodies reminiscent of klezmer-jazz and Balkan-jazz hybrids by artists like Steve Bernstein (and) the winding, angular grooves of Tim Berne." (JAZZIZ)
Besides her work as a leader of Jessica Lurie Ensemble, Jessica is a founding member and composer for the Tiptons Saxophone Quartet, Living Daylights trio and La Buya. The Jessica Lurie Ensemble recently enthralled fans at the 2012 Winter Jazz Fest Kickoff in NYC, and was voted MVP on Jamcruise 10 (Jan 2012). She has performed and recorded with artists such as Bill Frisell, The Indigo Girls, Mark Ribot, Karl Denson, Frank London, Vinicio Capossela, Skerik, Nels Cline, Kenny Wolleson, Bernie Worrell and Ivan Neville, and created twelve multi-media works for live music, painting and video with visual artist Danijel Zezelj. The JLE has been featured at festivals worldwide such as: Vienna Klezmore Festival, SXSW, Pisa Instabile, Motovun Film Festival, Babel Arts, Earwing No Jazz, JVC Jazz Festival, CMJ, Bumbershoot International Music Festival, Earshot Jazz, and Jazzmiele and jazz documentary Icons Among Us.
She is currently promoting her new release Megaphone Heart (April 24, 2012) co-produced by Todd Sickafoose, that features Todd on acoustic bass, Allison Miller on drums, Erik Deutsch on keyboard, Brandon Seabrook on banjo and guitar, with special guest Marika Hughes on cello. Her previous CD Shop of Wild Dreams has received praise in US and internationally, described as “original, soulful, entirely unpredictable – call it jazz as that’s the only genre big enough to contain it but listen for influences from East European choral singing to roots American country gospel, experimental jazz to to deep groovin’ funky beats.”
